2016 tucson workshop - Call for papers

November 10-11, 2016

Our next technical workshop in Tucson is quickly approaching. As we finalize plans, we are extending the submission deadline for papers and invite all members who wish to submit an educational paper to provide a topic and brief abstract.

Because the workshop is focused on fabrication, primary consideration will be given to papers discussing how to build an operational and technical edge within companies.

The presentation schedule is still being crafted, but current topics include:

  • Freeform optics
  • Working with IR materials
  • Advances in polish materials
  • High precision lens mounting
  • Applying Lean principles to optics manufacturing
  • Developments in aspheric manufacturing
  • Advancements in cleaning technologies

Thank you to all who provided their work; we look forward to seeing what other topics are submitted!

Tucson workshop to include mirror lab tour

Attendees of the Tucson Workshop this fall will have the chance to visit the University of Arizona Mirror Lab. Touring the lab gives members the opportunity to learn techniques for:

- More effective optical cleaning
- Faster experiment design
- Scratch and damage management
- Sapphire processing, and much more

Tours for APOMA members are scheduled for Thursday, November 10 from 3:30 pm to 6 pm.

east High optics vip visit

In April, Congresswoman Louise Slaughter toured the East Precision Optics Lab with Adele Ratcliff and Neil Supola from the Department of Defense.

The Optical Program at Rochester's East High School has been drawing attention since it was started by teacher Logan Newman. The lab allows students to get an early start in optics and photonics, encouraging many of them toward a future career in the industry.

During their visit, Slaughter, Ratcliff, and Supola toured the lab, saw equipment demonstrations, and met with some of the students.
